Researching cancer is one of the most important causes for fundraising in the world. It affects an estimated 3.5 million people in the UK, with a shocking 1 in 2 people, that’s 49.8%, being diagnosed with cancer in the UK within their lifetime. But you don’t have to be diagnosed with cancer to be affected by it, the patients entire network feels the rift.
However, despite all the negative statistics still being produced, there are increasingly positive ones! Since the 1970s, the survival rates have doubled with now 50% of all people diagnosed with cancer now survive 10 years or more and the death rates are currently at their lowest level ever recorded, dropping 29% since the peaking in 1989!
This only inspires the push for funding for more research, treatments and patient support. Whether you have been affected directly, indirectly or not at all, everyone can agree that raising money for researching cancer is crucial!
What is Steptember
At TLG, we are showing our support for cancer research with ‘Steptember’, a month where we are sparking some friendly competition whilst spending time in the great outdoors! For every step goal we hit, we will be donating to Move Against Cancer (Move Against Cancer) and we would love for you to join in too.
Feel free to donate, our Just Giving link is at the top and bottom of this blog! We will be sharing weekly updates on our social media so you can see just how active the Leppingtons are. So, double knot your laces and get walking, let’s make a difference together!
Why We Chose Walking
Evidence linking higher physical activity to lower cancer risk comes mainly from observational studies. Although observational studies cannot prove a causal relationship, the studies from different populations that have similar results do provide evidence of a causal connection.
Despite scientists are still investigating how physical activity reduces cancer risk, studies show that regular activity can help maintain healthy hormone levels, improve insulin sensitivity, reduce inflammation and help move food through the digestive system more quickly. Studies from 2014-2016 show that people who do regular physical activity have a lower risk of bowel cancer, breast cancer, endometrial cancer, oesophageal cancer, kidney cancer and stomach cancer.
Exercise is one of the most important things anyone diagnosed with cancer can do, not only for their physical health, but for their mental wellbeing too, with real cancer patients saying how, “it’s tough at first but it makes you feel stronger and more human”. Physically, exercise can cut cancer related exhaustion by 40-50%, promote better bone health, stronger muscles and reduce side effects. Mentally, exercise improves mood, sleep and promotes sharper focus. In the long term, data suggests regular activity can reduce the chances of certain cancers returning.
Why We Are Doing Steptember
TLG is doing Steptember to not only raise money for Move Against Cancer (Move Against Cancer) but also to show our support for everyone affected by cancer, while aiming to inspire you to get walking too!
Move Against Cancer’s vision is ‘for every person impacted by cancer to feel supported and empowered to live an active and fulfilling life’ and we couldn’t agree more. Everyone deserves to receive necessary resources, support and information no matter what.
We want to remind everyone that no one is ever alone. There is always help, support and people who care.
This isn’t just about policies or initiatives, it’s about heart. It’s about showing up for each other, not just as colleagues, but as humans.
